How to Choose the Best Eyeshadow for Your Eye Color (And Skin Tone!)

Let’s be real, choosing eyeshadow can feel overwhelming sometimes. With so many shades and finishes out there, it’s tough to know what actually looks good on you.

The good news?
You don’t have to be a makeup artist to figure it out.

Whether you’re into barely-there beauty or going full glam, this guide is here to help you find your perfect crème-to-powder eyeshadow match based on your eye color, skin tone, and personal style.

Where Does Your Eye Color Come From?

Before we get into pairing eye color with eyeshadow shades, have you ever wondered how you got your unique eye color?

Here’s a little science-meets-beauty moment to get us started…

Your eye color is determined by a mix of genetics, light reflection, and two main types of melanin: eumelanin (dark brown to black pigment) and pheomelanin (reddish-yellow pigment).

The balance and density of these pigments in the front layer of the iris determine how light scatters…and that’s what gives your eyes their unique shade!

Melanin is a pigment that also determines your skin and hair color. No matter your skin tone, every human contains melanin in their body and in their irises, but the amount and how it’s distributed gives you your overall unique coloring.

Those with higher levels of melanin tend to be medium to deeper in skin tone. Those with lower levels of melanin are usually fairer to lighter medium complected.

However, for eye color, 150 genes help regulate melanin production in the iris and ultimately determine whether you’ll have deep brown eyes or light baby blues.

  • Brown eyes have high levels of eumelanin and are the most common globally.
  • Blue eyes actually don’t have blue pigment, just very low melanin. The blue appearance comes from how light is scattered (kind of like the sky!).
  • Green eyes have a mix of both eumelanin and pheomelanin, with moderate melanin levels. This balance creates a rich, rare hue that often shifts in brightness.
  • Hazel eyes are a blend usually showing green, gold, and brown depending on lighting and surroundings.
  • Gray eyes have even less melanin than blue, but the way collagen fibers scatter light makes them look silvery or stormy.

We’ve covered the DNA and light-scattering magic behind your eye color. Now it’s time to glam it up.

Let’s enhance those windows to the soul…

Fun fact:
More than 150 genes

Color Theory 101
(But Made Simple)

If you remember the color wheel from school, congrats…
you already have a head start.

Find your eye color on the color wheel and check what’s directly across.
Those are your power shades. We encourage you to explore 1–2 shades in either direction on the wheel.

Here’s the deal:

Want your eyes to pop?
Use complementary colors. These are the ones across from your eye color on the color wheel.

Want a softer, more everyday glam?
Go for monochromatic or similar tones to your eye color. This would be a range of tones, tints, or shades of the eye color. Or these could be analogous colors that live adjacent to each other on the color wheel.

Neutral vs Natural Eye Makeup:
What’s the Difference?

Neutral: Think of this as soft glam. You’re working with pinks, browns, golds, champagnes and don’t forget contour, liner, and lashes.

The skin coverage is more medium to full, and the overall vibe is polished and refined.

Perfect for that clean aesthetic or an elevated daily look.

Natural: This is your “no-makeup makeup” moment.

The foundation is lighter, letting your real skin peek through.

Eyeshadow is applied with a lighter hand…soft beiges, taupe, and maybe a touch of shimmer. It’s all about letting your natural beauty do the talking.

Both neutral and natural styles can be beautifully created with crème-to-powder shadows. It’s all in the application technique and how well you blend.

💙 Blue Eyes

Blue eyes thrive with colors on the warm end of the wheel especially anything with a peachy or coppery tone. These shades warm up your gaze and make the cool-toned blue sparkle like crazy.

Peach, Coral, Orange, & Copper: These are complementary tones across from blue on the color wheel. They add striking contrast with a youthful warm enhancement.

Baby Pink, Soft Rose, & Lavender: Cool pastels make blue eyes look soft, yet bright and fresh.

Blues & Purples: Monochromatic looks with deeper blues like navy and denim tones (or plums and berry shades) can deepen the appearance of the blue in your eye color without being too overpowering.

Deep Grays & Metallic Silver: Adds a soft vibe but adds subtle intensity to enhance the icy and steely aspect of the blue.

Golds, Bronze, & Champagne: The ultimate soft-glam highlight shades that add shine and illumination.

Taupe, Browns & Deeper Shades: Helps create a dramatic, sultry effect.

💚 Green Eyes

Green eyes are considered the rarest of the main eye colors. Only a small percentage of people worldwide have green eyes.

On the color wheel, green opposite is red. So, anything in the red family, plus other shades that match the iris, will work beautifully. Rich earthy and warm tones help bring out flecks that you may not have known you had.

Purple + green = total fire.

Burgundy, Maroon, & Plum: Deep purple tones and rust colors add drama and bring out the warmth.

Champagne & Rose Gold: Adds subtle glam and highlight.

Grey: A soft, silvery alternative to black for everyday chic. This neutral tone helps green eyes appear more alive and vibrant.

Cool Browns, Lavender, & Mauves: Adds a touch of an earthy depth with a natural softness.

Olive, Teals, & Greens: Match the shade of your iris for the biggest impact for a sophisticated look that emphasizes the natural green of your eyes.

Rust, Copper, & Orange: These fiery warm tones create a visually striking contrast against the green eye color to appear more vibrant.

🤎 Brown Eyes

Lucky you! Brown eyes go with just about everything. They are like the chameleons of the makeup world.

Brown eyes aren’t limited by the color wheel the way blue, green, or hazel eyes are because brown is a neutral. That means the possibilities are pretty much endless!

Bright Green & Blue: Emerald, Olive, Teal, Navy, and Cobalt electric blues add a fun pop and dimension. Great on all skin tones and helps create contrast with deep brown eyes.

Violets & Purples: Shades like plum and eggplant bring out warm golden flecks and add some drama. They help the eyes stand out.

Natural Browns: From light beige taupe to deep espresso, brown-on-brown = stunning yet classic vibes. Everyday staples would include colors that are caramel, mocha, and overall earthy golden hues.

Warm Metallics & Coppery Orange: Adds warmth with fire and helps enhance the richness to brown eyes.

🧡 Hazel Eyes

Hazel eyes are multi-dimensional, shifting between green, gold, and brown…so you can play with a huge variety of shades. Hazel eyes change with the light, so we encourage you to have fun with tones that shift and shimmer.

Earth Tones: Browns, golds, copper and soft olive tones add pop while still having it be a lowkey slay. These are all colors that contribute to a hazel eye so earth tones pull those hues to intensify the look.

Mauve & Burgundy: These shades help complement the green and brown tones of a hazel eye. Pair with a golden finish to complement both warm and cool aspects of this unique eye color.

Navy: Bold, rich hues add elegance and depth.

🩶 Grey Eyes

Gray eyes get their pop from contrast and cool-toned drama. Cool tones create a mysterious, dreamy look.

Icy Blue, Charcoal, & Silver: By adding a cool toned monochromatic shadow pairing, highlighting the silvery undertone creates an ethereal look.

Slate, Lilac, and Dusty Rose: Keeps it chill and soft but defined. Muted shades complement the softness of the grey eye color.

Teal, Cobalt, & Navy: Pops of color act as the added depth and drama without overpowering.
